Transfer Deadline Day has been full of twists and turns this evening. At about 6pm it was being reported that Danny Welbeck had undergone a medical at London Colney ahead of completing a loan deal to join Arsenal from Manchester United.
Manchester United are looking forward to announcing Radamel Falcao's arrival which is reportedly leaving Welbeck available. Arsenal need a new striker with Olivier Giroud on the sidelines, and in fact, without his injury they could do with attacking reinforcements.
But those reports soon dissipated. The deal was back-tracked as Arsenal made it clear no medical had been done and that they were not interested in the England international - disappointing, and pleasing, Arsenal fans depending on their view of the pacey forward.
But according to a former Arsenal striker, the deal is in fact done!
Alan Smith, who now works as a commentator for Sky Sports, suggested on Sky Sports News HQ earlier that he had received information saying Welbeck was in fact an Arsenal player already.
He told Jim White:
"Well we were told that is off, we thought it was and at that point, a second after I got a text to say that the deal has been done. So we will wait and hear on that. I hear that they have secured the signature of Danny Welbeck. I don't know if it is a loan or they have signed him permanently but I think that is a good signing so let's hope that is the case."
The BBC are now reporting that a fee of £16 million has been agreed for Welbeck. Another Transfer Deadline Day twist. Time will tell.
