Benitez doesn't expect to land Liverpool's Lucas

Napoli boss Rafa Benitez has admitted his side face a tough race against time if they are to snap up Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva.

Napoli have been chasing Liverpool defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva for weeks, but the Serie A side may not be able to close out a deal in time.

Lucas seems to have been cut out of Liverpool's first-team plans this season and the time may be right for the Brazilian international to leave Anfield.

Over the last few weeks ex-Liverpool boss Benitez has been pressing to try and bring Lucas to the Stadio San Paolo, but progress has been slow.

While reports suggest that Turkish side Galatasaray and Napoli are both trying to sign Lucas today, Benitez has confessed his doubts that a deal can be done.

"I don't think there are any surprises to come in terms of arrivals," the Spanish tactician said on Mediaset Premium after Napoli's season opening win over Genoa.

"More departures are possible, but I think that our transfer market is closed."

Benitez may be playing his cards close to his chest, but Napoli have had a busy summer of dealings and Lucas may be one deal too many.

Lucas may well be watching with concern because he faces the possibility of spending the next few months warming the bench at Anfield.
