Guillem Balague has revealed what he believes is Arsenal's priority on this transfer deadline day.
Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has been speaking about Arsenal’s reported interest in Radamel Falcao, while also revealing the type of player the Gunners are hoping to sign on transfer deadline day.
The journalist was writing for Bleacher Report when he addressed the ongoing claims that Arsenal had missed out on Falcao as the Colombian reportedly nears a loan switch to Manchester United.
“Arsenal were never in the equation for Falcao,” Ballague said. “They are trying to finalise (a) deal for a centre-mid who can play centre-back.”
That would be no surprise given the fact that they are the two positions Wenger has been tipped to strengthen this summer.
But with Olivier Giroud currently out injured, it will still come as a surprise to some that the Gunners are not intent on moving for a new front-man, especially when you consider the inexperience of both Yaya Sanogo and Joel Campbell.
Some would say Arsenal have signed a midfielder-cum-centre-back in the form of the impressive Calum Chambers. But his age is such that the Gunners were always likely to look for more experience in those positions.
If Balague is correct, what Arsenal are looking for will not be particularly easy to find, especially with time running out.
But Wenger will have his eyes on certain players and he may just spring another deadline day surprise similar to last summer.
