World Cup defender set for Southampton loan - despite Arsenal transfer rumours

Arsenal are set to miss out on the signing of rumoured target Toby Alderweireld, as he's set to join Southampton on loan.

The Gunners have have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season, but whilst their two wins and three draws in all competitions is a good start, there have also been plenty of concerns already - the biggest of which has been the lack of cover in defence, meaning new signing Calum Chambers has had to slide over from right back to fill in at centre back in the absence of either Laurent Koscielny or Per Mertesacker.

The likes of Kostas Manolas and Matija Nastasic had been linked in recent weeks, but last week it was reported that Atletico Madrid's Toby Alderweireld had been in talks with the club over a move to the Emirates Stadium having failed to break into their first team ahead of Diego Godin and Miranda.

The Belgian international impressed at the World Cup despite playing at right back, and his father recently pleaded with Diego Simeone to let his son go out on loan to play first team football. Liverpool and Tottenham had been linked, but it is now known that Alderweireld will finally head to England - but not to one of the so-called 'big boys' of the Premier League.

Instead, Alderweireld is set for a move to Southampton, where he will be expected to fill the void left by Dejan Lovren, who left the South Coast for Liverpool after an impressive season for the Saints.

The move is something of a coup for Southampton, as Alderweireld was one of the hottest properties on the market a year ago after impressing with Ajax. He chose a move to Atletico, and whilst it didn't work out, he now has the chance to prove his worth under Ronald Koeman at St. Mary's Stadium - and given his struggles over the past 12 months, he will be chomping at the bit to succeed.
