Queens Park Rangers registered a 1-0 victory over Sunderland at Loftus Road in the Premier League on Saturday.
Steven Fletcher and Van Aanholt had chances for Sunderland soon after, while Jack Rodwell headed just wide from an Adam Johnson delivery midway through the first half.
QPR were unlucky not to surge ahead on the half-hour mark when Leroy Fer hit the bat with a right-footed attempt from distance, before Matthew Phillips shot wide.
The hosts eventually took the lead in the second minute of first-half injury time through Austin, who shot home from close range.
Joey Barton could have doubled Rangers’ advantage in the opening minutes of the second half had he been more accurate with his long-range attempt, before Sunderland started to create chances and ask questions of the home team’s defence.
As the match progressed, Harry Redknapp’s side had chances through Junior Hoilett, Jordon Mutch and Armand Traore, but they had to settle for a 1-0 win.
