With just two days left of the current transfer window, Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal is eager to make a late splash and add new faces to his side.
Five new players have joined the Red Devils this summer – including a record £59.7 million deal to bring in Argentine superstar Angel Di Maria – but a slow start to the Premier League campaign has forced Van Gaal to push for more deals.
According to the latest reports, versatile Dutch international Daley Blind is all-but set to become United’s sixth signing.
The 24-year-old is comfortable in a number of positions and played at left wingback under Van Gaal’s guidance for the Dutch national team at the Word Cup.
His performances attracted the attentions from a number of observers across Europe, but it is the Old Trafford outfit who have pushed for his transfer after agreeing a £13.8 million fee with Eredivisie champions Ajax.
The United boss confirmed after his side’s 0-0 draw at Burnley that the player is to have a medical in Manchester, before hinting that yet another deal could be in the pipeline.
"He’ll come to Manchester to have a medical, and then we might have a new player." He said, quoted by the Daily Mail.
Despite the influx of new players and the imminent arrival of Blind, United still appear short at the back following the summer departures of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra.
Rookie Tyler Blackett has so far been called upon to play at the back in van Gaal’s preferred 3-5-2 formation and despite performing admirably, it’s a position that undoubtedly needs strengthening.
Should an unexpected late signing arrive at Old Trafford, it wouldn't be wise to be counting on a new creative player in the mould of Angel Di Maria.
