Despite a rocky first year in North London, Arsenal ace Mesut Ozil isn’t short of confidence as he rates himself among the world’s best play-makers.
The German international joined the Gunners from La Liga giants Real Madrid for a record transfer fee of £42.5 million last summer.
Many Premier League observers, however, felt that Ozil struggled during his first season in England with former United striker Michael Owen one of his staunchest critics, once writing in his SportLobster blog:
“Despite people constantly telling me that Mesut Ozil is world class, his inconsistency means that we only see occasional glimpses of real quality. His odd good performance is usually followed by half a dozen poor ones.”
Criticism of the Arsenal play-maker didn’t just stem from the British media as the Germans weren’t too impressed with his World Cup campaign in Brazil either – often labelling him lazy.
Statistics, however, often told a different story and that was with the former Real Madrid star playing out of position on the left wing as a result of a pre-tournament injury to Marco Reus.
Ozil believes he could have offered more in his favoured number 10 role, and even went as far as saying that in this position he is amongst the best players in the world.
“I’m one of the best players in the world in that No 10 position. Fans, coaches, players and everyone knows that my best position is play-maker,” he said in an interview with Guardian.
“On the left, it’s more difficult. If I do get past someone I’m still away from the danger zone, still on the flank, and it’s harder for me to find the final ball with my right foot than with my left.”
“I have high expectations of myself. I know what I can do and in the past few years I’ve shown that I belong to the select group of best players in the world as a No 10. I’ve played on the left in a World Cup and for Arsenal but my best performances come as a 10.”
Last season, Ozil was played in a number of positions behind striker Olivier Giroud and contributed to a total of 14 goals by means of goals and assists in 26 Premier League appearances.
