Liverpool fans react to Agger departure: 'The worst transfer news'

Even Caroline Wozniacki tweeted in regret after it was confirmed the centre-back will return to former club Brondby.

After eight long years, Daniel Agger is no longer a Liverpool player.

The Denmark centre-back's Anfield exit was confirmed earlier today, with Agger returning to his first club Brondby.

The 29-year-old, however, leaves with a heavy heart - and with the Reds' loyal fans imprinted in his memory.

"Liverpool have been such a big part of my life and my family's lives for so long, that leaving is extremely difficult," Agger told Liverpool's official website.

"The opportunity arose for me to return home to Brondby and at this stage of my career it felt like the right decision for me.

"I wouldn't leave here to go anywhere else and that has been proven by my actions in recent seasons - I have turned down many offers to move to other Premier League and European clubs.

"I would like to thank the Liverpool supporters for the incredible backing they have given me in my time here and the warmth and generosity of spirit displayed to my family."

And Liverpool fans, it seems, have returned those heartfelt emotions.

Indeed, many have expressed their sadness over his departure on Twitter - even tennis player Caroline Wozniacki.

Here, then, are the best tweets relating to Agger's Anfield exit...
