The now retired master of Japanese animation to get honorary gong at this years Academy Awards
Set to be the first anime director and only the 4th animator to receive the Academy Honorary Award, Miyazaki’s name will now be up there with Disney.
Three of Miyazaki’s films have made it to the Oscars: Spirited Away won Best Animated Feature in 2002, Howl's Moving Castle was nominated for the same award, as was his directorial farewell The Wind Rises
Miyazaki will receive his honorary Oscar at the sixth annual Governors Awards on the 8th November
As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the Governors Awards are given for ‘lifetime achievements, exceptional contributions to motion picture arts and sciences, and outstanding service to the Academy." A befitting honour for a man that worked so tirelessly to bring such outstanding amd groundbreaking work.
Meanwhile Studio Ghibli’s latest feature to come to the west, The Tale Of Princess Kaguya has recently received an English language trailer which we have below. The movie debuts in US cinemas on 17th October, we hope a UK release will follow soon.
