New Tottenham Hotspur signing Federico Fazio has been handed the number 21 shirt and is available for selection ahead of Liverpool’s visit on Sunday, according to the North London club's official website.
The Argentine international defender became Spurs’ fifth signing of the summer on Wednesday following the arrivals of Ben Davies, Michel Vorm, Eric Dier and DeAndre Yedlin.
Boss Mauricio Pochettino had been chasing a high-profile defender for the last two months, and after missing out on Villarreal star Mateo Musacchio, he turned to Argentine compatriot Fazio as a viable alternative.
Standing at 6'5", the towering centre-back will provide height in both penalty areas and despite being slow, his excellent positional sense and ability to intercept could make him one of the bargains of the summer at just £8 million.
The 27-year-old was paraded to the White Hart Lane faithful during his new side’s easy Europa League victory over AEL Limassol on Thursday evening before beginning full training with the first team on Friday.
Available for selection on Sunday, his possible first-team debut with the club couldn’t be trickier if last season’s 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool is anything to go by.
Despite losing influential striker Luis Suarez in the summer, the Reds still have plenty of firepower and in new striker Mario Balotelli, they have a top player on their hands with a point to prove.
Nevertheless, defender Fazio isn’t new to facing the world’s best players, and his experience against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will help him stand in good stead when pitted against the Premier League’s best.
