Fernando Torres is still on the books of Chelsea, but he will not play for them anymore. That’s because he has been farmed out on loan to AC Milan on a two-year deal.
The Spain international striker travelled to Italy on Saturday, underwent a medical and was unveiled as a new Milan player. Torres’s current contract with Chelsea runs until June 2016, which means that his career with the Blues is effectively over.
The 30-year-old joined the London outfit from Liverpool for a transfer fee of £50 million in January 2011 amid much hype and expectations. But in his three-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge, Torres was largely a disappointment and scored just 20 goals in over 100 Premier League appearances.
Torres did win the FA Cup, the Champions League and the Europa League during his time with Chelsea, but the 2010 World Cup champion simply could not convince the club’s fans.
Following the announcement of the former Atletico Madrid star’s departure to Italian giants Milan, Chelsea supporters took to social networking site Twitter to have their say on the transfer.
Here is a selection of their tweets. We have also included some tweets from other clubs’ fans to gauge their reaction to Torres’s move to Serie A.
I really think the poll on Soccernet about worst value for money signing is tilted to #Torres because of his recent transfer.— Dustin R. Rideout (@drrideout) August 30, 2014
