Arsenal and Benfica are reportedly continuing their negotiations regarding the possible transfer of Joel Campbell.
The rumours come despite Gunners boss Arsene Wenger saying earlier this summer that the Costa Rica international was very much in his plans.
Following the injury suffered by Olivier Giroud, Campbell’s place at the Emirates Stadium seemed even more secure; and yet rumours of a move to Portugal continue.
The latest story comes from O Jogo, which claims the two clubs are continuing to negotiate over a possible €10million transfer.
The report adds that the ball is very much in Wenger’s court, with the Frenchman keen to bring in an experienced front-man to offset the temporary absence of Giroud. Should such a player be signed, it is being claimed that Campbell’s departure would be far more likely.
If the deal does ultimately come off, it will be disappointing for those Arsenal fans who were keen to see what Campbell could do in the Premier League.
An impressive loan spell in Greece suggested he was ready to stake a claim for a first-team place in North London; and while that is still very much a possibility, the latest report suggests he could well be on his way for good.
