Former Red - Liverpool will be very happy with the draw

Liverpool's return to the Champions League sees them paired with current European Champions Real Madrid.

The Reds' painful five-year absence from the Champions League will have been forgotten about after Thursday's draw saw them placed alongside current holders Real Madrid in Group B, and the meeting with the Spanish giants has really whetted the appetite of fans and players alike at Anfield.

The two games against Los Blancos is the splash of glamour that supporters had hoped for, and the Kop will be in full voice when the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez make the trip to Anfield on October 22.

The two teams last met in the 2009 knockout stages and the visit of Los Blancos will awaken proud memories of a 5-0 demolition from Rafael Benitez's side.

However, despite the meeting of two teams who have won the European Cup a combined 15 times, the group appears to be relatively straight-forward for Brendan Rodgers' men.

That is an assessment former midfielder Didi Hamann concurs with, and the German believes that Liverpool will be more than pleased with the draw considering the possible outcomes due to their position in pot three.

He told Sky Sports News: "It will be great to see [Real Madrid] back at Anfield, it’s been too long and it is two European powerhouses.

"I think they will be more worried about the others teams because you still have to beat them, but I think when they look at it, Liverpool will be very happy with the draw."

The perfect combination offers both the glitz and glamour of Europe's premier competition, while also keeping it safe enough to suggest that Liverpool will be able to comfortably qualify - the draw has been kind to the Reds.

The other team teams in Group B are Ludogorets and FC Basle, and Rodgers' charges will be reasonably confident of taking enough points from those games to secure their qualification regardless of the outcome of the Madrid meetings.
