Valencia have entered the bidding for Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley, according to Sky Sports.
United reportedly had accepted an £8 million offer from Aston Villa for Cleverley yesterday, but the La Liga side are hoping to swoop in and steal him late on.
The central midfielder has been linked away from Old Trafford for much of the summer, but his sale seems a near certainty now.
The 25-year-old is expected to move away from the Red Devils before the transfer window closes after being told by Louis Van Gaal that he is free to move on.
The Dutchman has been determined to strengthen his United squad since arriving and a host of marquee arrivals have been added – with more expected to follow in the coming days.
United now must curtail their squad and Cleverley is one of the players who could relinquished.
Danny Welbeck, Shinji Kagawa and Anderson are all expected to face a similar fate to Cleverley in the imminent future, but it is the former Watford loanee who looks closest to the exit.
If United deem Valencia’s offer acceptable he will be free to choose between a move to Spain or staying in England.
Cleverley has a certain amount to prove after a series of under-par performances since breaking through at Old Trafford.
He has made 44 league appearances over the past two seasons, but appears to have regressed under the pressure of representing United rather than progressed.
Cleverley now resembles a player desperately lacking in confidence and by the game the scrutiny of his performances becomes greater and greater making a move abroad potentially appealing.
