Aston Villa winger backs Cissokho to silence Liverpool critics

Charles N’Zogbia believes that Aly Cissokho - a player previously mocked by Liverpool fans online - can be a major asset to Aston Villa this season.

When the news broke that Aly Cissokho’s loan spell at Liverpool would not be turning into a permanent switch, one Reds fan headed online to mock the 26-year-old defender’s contributions over an indifferent 15 Premier League game spell at the club.

Entitled “Fever for the Flava” the 2:49 video showcased Cissokho’s “13/14 Season Highlights” and became an instant hit across social media, with the video splicing together some of the full-backs more forgettable moments at the club.

At the time, Liverpool supporters and Premier League fans alike were laughing but, fast-forward a few months and one section certainly not smiling anymore is the Aston Villa contingent.

Signed by the Midlands club for an undisclosed fee over the summer, the one-time France international comes with a European pedigree, having previously impressed at Porto, Lyon and Valencia, but he has yet to showcase his ability in the Premier League.

That will change this term, according to Villa teammate Charles N’Zogbia, who backed Cissokho to help the Lions kick-on this season following two campaigns in which the Claret and Blue have struggled at the wrong end of the table.

N’Zogbia worked alongside Cissokho as part of a previous Les Bleus squad and praised the 26-year-old as a “strong defender” who could really add something to the team’s backline.

"Aly has been playing in France and Spain and last year he was playing at Liverpool - so he has great experience,” he told the Aston Villa website.

"He works really hard for the team and will help the team become stronger defensively.”

Villa have certainly looked more solid in the Premier League this season, with the Midlands giants yet to concede in the top-flight this term and N’Zogbia believes it won’t be long before Cissokho becomes something of a mainstay at the club.

"He is a fast learner ... so it is not difficult for him to settle in - on and off the field."

The Villans are at home to Hull City this Sunday, with the Tigers looking to bounce back from their early Europa League exit at the hands of Lokeren on Thursday night.

For Villa and Cissokho, meanwhile, another victory would mean onwards and upwards for a club and player keen to silence the doubters this term.
