Robbie Savage compared Balotelli's transfer to a particular scenario in the Championship
In his column for the Daily Mirror, Savage drew a comparison with a discussion he had with a fan on a radio show when discussing the possible transfer of Jordan Rhodes from Championship side Blackburn Rovers.
He said: "One Huddersfield fan who rang 606 last weekend reckons Blackburn should hold out for £15 million before parting company with the Scotland striker [Rhodes]. If you need to know what is wrong with the transfer market in England that says it all.
"Unlike Balotelli, Rhodes has never played in the Premier League, and his three goals for Scotland came against Australia and Luxembourg.
"Scoring goals for fun in the Championship is one thing, but doing it in the highest company every week is a different kettle of fish. When there is only £1 million difference between a player who has won the title, scored at the World Cup and lived a bit off the pitch, and of the leading scorers in the second tier of English football, someone has got their numbers wrong."
The former Premier League midfielder points out a number of failings in the transfer market on the domestic front, but there is a kind of acknowledgement of Liverpool taking advantage of the opportunity that had arisen by getting a striker with the talent and pedigree that Balotelli has for such a fee.
There are several eye-watering transfer fees so far this summer. Shane Long has moved to Southampton from Hull City for £12 million, whilst in the Championship Ross McCormack has moved from Leeds United to Fulham for £11 million.
Many have commented on the fee Liverpool paid for Balotelli, and have suggested it's a good one for Liverpool though Savage has raised a point that could have wider significance when it comes to talent from Britain. If they can get a better deal like Liverpool did with Balotelli then maybe clubs will be looking elsewhere and may be that bit more opportunistic. Liverpool have been shrewd in this case in what has been an over-inflated transfer market.
