Having missed out on Kostas Manolas, how does Arsenal's new Greek target Sokratis compare?
Arsenal missed out on defender Kostas Manolas earlier this week, with the Olympiakos defender switching to Roma.
Instead the Gunners have reportedly turned attention to his international teammate Sokratis, of Borussia Dortmund.
The Mail is one of several outlets to report Arsenal have submitted a £12 million offer for the centre-back, who blossomed in the Bundesliga last season.
He stepped up with Neven Subotic out injured and Mats Hummels missing games too, but with both players now fit, he is not a first choice.
There is no guarantee he would be at Arsenal either, but the Gunners could offer him a fresh challenge to join their title tilt.
Manolas is three years younger than Sokratis, but at 26 he is entering his peak years and if the Gunners could sign him without overpaying then they would pull off a shrewd deal.
At the World Cup the pair put in very accomplished, and similar showings. While Manolas was superior in terms of winning tackles, Sokratis came out on top in terms of interceptions. He also made more clearances and gave away fewer fouls - while dismissing him on the basis of one error made is too hasty.
Certainly Arsenal are not settling for second best by targeting the Dortmund man, who has more experience and has played in a better league. If the club are successful in signing him, fans should be positive about the new addition.
