Arsenal's £10.9m transfer fail would be great news for United in Strootman pursuit

If Arsenal lose out to PSG for Adrien Rabiot, it could benefit Manchester United in their pursuit of Kevin Strootman.

He has become one of Europe's most wanted young players and with good reason. A talented, if not mercurial midfielder, Adrien Rabiot has the world at his feet. But he is impatient and not ready to play a bit part role at Paris Saint-Germain once again this campaign - despite the wealth of talent ahead of him in the PSG pecking order.

With that in mind plenty of teams have been linked with a move for the player in recent times, and this week it looked as if he was off to Arsenal. It was reported that his mother, who also acts as his agent, was in London this week to finalise a potential £10.9 million switch of capital cities across the Channel.

But that was not the case on Friday. Reports in France were instead suggesting that PSG had agreed a fee with AS Roma for his services. The Italian side, managed by fellow Frenchman Rudi Garcia, have reportedly taken the lead to sign the player with a €15 million bid for his services.

So while this sounds like bad news for Arsenal, why could it be good news for Manchester United and Louis van Gaal?

Simple answer - Kevin Strootman.

It is a well known fact that LvG is a big Strootman fan and would love to bring him to Manchester United. Unfortunately for him the player is still recovering from a serious knee injury, so they are waiting for him to fully recover from his current problem before making a move.

But make a move they will, especially with Arturo Vidal and William Carvalho no longer said to be on their radar.

A midfield maestro is just what United need and Strootman is just that. There is no doubt that should they go to a Rabiot-less Roma with a bid for Strootman they will probably be turned away. But with Rabiot at the club, a similar player to Strootman but a younger version, they might consider a deal should it be at the right price.

Arsenal's loss could therefore become United's gain.
