Arsenal star 'the best in the Premier League in these situations'

Manchester City striker Niall Quinn and Paul Merson gave their views on Jack Wilshere's performance against Besiktas.

Apart from almost giving away a crucial penalty, Jack Wilshere had an excellent game for Arsenal against Besiktas.

He played a key role in the decisive goal, battled throughout the contest, and made more successful dribbling attempts (5) than any other player.

His passing on the edge of the box before half-time led to Alexis Sanchez's winner and first goal for the club, and former Gunner Paul Merson believes there is nobody better than Wilshere in that scenario.

He told SkySports: "Wilshere is the best in Premier League in those sort of situations when its nice and tight. Not many players see those one-twos."

His fellow pundit, former Manchester City, Sunderland and Arsenal striker Niall Quinn believes Wilshere needs to step out of the shadow of teammate Aaron Ramsey when the pair are in the same side.

Wilshere's performance was welcome yesterday and a big improvement upon recent games, in which Ramsey excelled but the Welshman was suspended for last night's clash.

"He took the game by the scruff of the neck and that’s what he’s got to do,

“He’s got to show that he’s so good at what he does that he doesn’t have to worry about Ramsey or about other players. He has to be the main man."

Wilshere's impressive display last night was a message to his critics, and timely considering the importance of the fixture.

The England international now though has the platform he needs to kick on, and it will be even more disappointing if his performance level suddenly drops again.
