Talks had supposedly taken place between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday during the Champions League draw in Monaco for the transfer of midfielder Adrien Rabiot. However, now French newspaper L’Equipe are reporting that AS Roma have agreed a fee of €15 million for the 19-year-old talent.
The midfielder only has one year left on his contract with PSG and with the club reluctant to let him leave in 12 months’ time for nothing, and the player not willing to sign any new contract at the French club, the move suits both parties.
There is no doubt that on the pitch, Rabiot is a great talent, with the potential to go on and become a wonderful footballer, but so far his career has been plagued with poor decisions, both from Rabiot himself and his adviser and mother Veronique.
Rabiot started 13 games last season, and one of the reasons behind his desire to leave Paris is to play more first-team football. The Rabiot family believe he should be playing in PSG’s first eleven now, but in reality he is behind Blaise Matuidi, Marco Verratti and Thiago Motta. Even Yohan Cabaye is struggling to get a place in the first-team.
When he is allowed to just play football, he shows that he is an excellent passer of the ball. He has good vision and his long legs allow him to bring the ball forward confidently and effectively. The problem with Rabiot is that he knows he is good and the success at a young age has gone to his head, and also the people around him are not the best influences.
Roma would be the ideal choice for the under-20 international, they give him the best option to play more than he has at PSG, plus Coach Rudi Garcia has experience in bringing through young French talent.
It is doubtful that Rabiot would have made more than 13 starts under Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, and then you run into the possibility of the same problems surfacing in 12 months’ time.
Rabiot is a very talented footballer, but sometimes talent just isn’t enough to earn a move. With the attitude of the player and the people around him, it is a move that comes with possible consequences.
