Red Bull Salzburg’s early exit from the Champions League could be the perfect opportunity for Newcastle to swoop on former target Jonathan Soriano.
Newcastle United’s pursuit of goalscoring reinforcements could take them to Salzburg and a former Magpies target who may be looking for a move away in the very near future.
Jonathan Soriano was reportedly on the Toon’s transfer radar as recently as June, with the club keen to recruit low-cost imports as they look to improve on last seasons’ 10th place finish.
Available for around £5 million, the 28-year-old is certainly that and comes with something of a European pedigree, having been the top scorer in the Europa League last term with eight goals for Red Bull Salzburg.
The former Barcelona academy star became something of a YouTube sensation, during the Austrian side’s march to the last-16 of the competition, after scoring a sensational goal from near the half-way line against Dutch champions Ajax.
And after scoring an impressive 70 goals in 77 league appearances for the Austrian giants, it was widely thought that a move to bigger and better things was on the cards.
But with Red Bull Salzburg eager to keep hold of their biggest stars ahead of qualifying for the Champions League, it appeared that any potential deal was dead in the water.
That situation may have changed, however, after the Austrian side was dumped out of the competition by Malmo last night, with the Swedish side winning 3-0 on the night to advance to the group phase of the competition as the expense of Salzburg.
The Red Bull-backed club will now drop into the Europa League and with Soriano now in the peak years of his career, a transfer away from the Wals-Siezenheim looks a possibility.
Newcastle are certainly on the lookout for another striker, despite signing Ayoze Perez, Emmanuel Riviere and Facundo Ferreyra over the summer.
And while the Magpies are thought to be chasing a deal for Loic Remy, any failure to land the QPR forward could open the door for the Toon to reconsider their stance of this Europa League hotshot.
In the meantime, check out his memorable goal against Ajax.
