Arsenal progressed past Besiktas to reach the Champions League group stages.

Former England striker Michael Owen has revealed his relief to see Arsenal qualify for the Champions League group stages.

Now a pundit, Owen can regularly be found criticising the Gunners, tipping them two seasons in a row to finish in fifth in the Premier League.

Despite this is appears he puts nationalistic pride above any wish to see Arsenal fail, commenting on Twitter after the game:

Having four English sides in the final stages ensures the country's UEFA co-efficient ranking stays strong, and the Premier League retains it's four qualifying spots. Italy for example only have three.

The point raised regarding Alexis Sanchez, signed for around £30 million, is a great one and Owen was not the only one to discuss it.

His vital goal ensured against extra-time and the lottery of penalties, which could have led to the club missing out on the group stages and a cash windfall. The signing may have been a slightly calculated risk, but it has already almost repaid itself, and the Chilean can now be expected to go from strength to strength.
