Everton latest: Martinez plays down Lukaku's Chelsea reunion

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from Goodison Park...

Everton will learn their Europa League fate on Friday when the group stage draw is made in Monaco, and whilst some believe that the Toffees will struggle to cope with the added rigours of Europa League football on top of their Premier League campaign, manager Roberto Martinez says that it will be an 'interesting experiment'.

"European football brings an element of having to travel abroad and coping with different footballing styles and different cultural approaches and that is really exciting," said Martinez. "We see it as an interesting experiment for the squad with staff and players and it will be important to have those games.

Then on Saturday, the Toffees face another tough challenge as Chelsea travel to Goodison Park on Saturday evening - just a week after Everton's 2-2 draw with Arsenal. The game sees Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku facing off against his old side for the first time since his £28m permanent move, and Martinez says he doesn't think that the 21-year-old will be seeking revenge.

"Rom has strong inner strength and I don’t think he is motivated by who he is facing or who is in front of him," Martinez said. "It’s more about his role and status at Everton – he is a vital player for us and he is enjoying and embracing that. I do feel that we are going to see the best of Rom this season and I am really excited by his performances ahead in all different competitions, not because he is facing a former club."

Meanwhile, Everton have seen defender John Stones called up again for international duty as England prepare for fixtures against Norway and Switzerland, and the young centre back is now targeting his first start for the Three Lions.

"As I said at the end of last season, it was such a big shock to get the call off Roy Hodgson and this time I am going to try to build from that experience," said Stones. "I’ve got to keep working hard and hopefully it will happen, getting that first start. That will be my biggest aim this time around."
