England supporters react to Jack Colback's call-up

St James Park

England supporters are divided in their opinion over Newcastle United man Jack Colback's call-up to the Three Lions' squad.

Jack Colback was named in the England squad for the first time today and it has been greeted with a mixed reaction from supporters across the nation.

The energetic central-midfielder has put in a number of solid performances over the past year for Sunderland and, now Newcastle United, but there is a doubt that he is the man to push the Three Lions to the next level.

Colback is a battler on the pitch, but he seems another midfielder to fit into the ‘all-action’ bracket rather than the creative influence that England fans have been desperately yearning for.

As such, it was odd to hear his national manager Roy Hodgson say that he had heard Colback called ‘the Ginger Pirlo’ and that statement has done little to calm the controversy of his call-up.

The Three Lions boss has been tasked with looking towards the future after another disappointing World Cup over the summer.

England failed to win in Brazil and are now looking to produce a crop of players to stop the constant disappointment associated with their performances at major international tournaments.

It appears that Colback has been identified as someone who could be a part of this and his first cap could come in either of England’s upcoming games against Norway or Switzerland next month.

Speaking on his appointment the 24-year-old central-midfielder said he was very proud to be in the squad.

"It's another proud moment for me and my family," Colback told Newcastle's official website.

"My football is going really well at the moment and this is the icing on the cake after moving here.

"There's been a few retirements since the World Cup, in [Steven] Gerrard and [Frank] Lampard, which has left a hole. I'm not saying I'm necessarily their replacement but there are opportunities there for young players to stake a claim."

But whilst Colback may have been pleased there are a few other supporters who are less happy to see him in the squad.

Here is some of the best reaction to Colback’s call-up to the England squad, which has split opinion.
