Transfer Bin: Joe Allen linked with £20m Manchester United move

Joe Allen Liverpool

The Daily Star claims Manchester United are interested in signing Joe Allen from Liverpool.

The Daily Star are the latest offenders in our transfer bin series with the suggestion that Manchester United could be about to make a move for Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen.

Other than the fact Allen wouldn’t be able to show his face on Merseyside again, there are plenty of things wrong with this rumour which explain why the Welshman won’t be moving to Old Trafford any time soon.

That rivalry between the two clubs is the first and most obvious point.

United, in need of a central midfielder and a central defender, could have already moved for Allen and a teammate like Daniel Agger.

However, such is the negative feeling towards United from Liverpool fans, it would be impossible for any Liverpool player to move to Old Trafford and maintain a productive relationship with the Kop.

Whether Allen would be willing to alienate a group of supporters who have stuck by him when there have been calls to axe him from the squad is questionable.

Secondly, United arguably need a player in the middle of their team who is bulkier, stronger and more aggressive than Allen.

Allen is a perfectly good player in possession as well as off the ball, but United already have several players similar in terms of size and stature such as Juan Mata and Ander Herrera.

United need more of a Kevin Strootman or Arturo Vidal type player, someone who can work box-to-box and cut an intimidating presence at the same time.

Thirdly, Brendan Rodgers is likely to want to hang onto Allen because he’ll be an important squad player over the course of the season.

It’s a case of whether Allen will be satisfied with another season in and out of the first team at Anfield but there is evidence from last season to suggest that he’ll get regular chances in all competitions over the course of the next ten months.

Rubbish Rating: Allen doesn’t offer United anything drastically different to what they don’t already have and the player is unlikely to turn his back on the Reds. Don’t believe it.
