Sevilla star Federico Fazio has completed an £8 million move to Tottenham Hotspur, signing a four-year deal with the club.
Michael Dawson’s departure to Hull City was the giveaway sign that Fazio would complete a move to White Hart Lane, as Mauricio Pochettino bulks up the centre of his defence before the end of the transfer window.
Fazio brings plenty to the table for Tottenham, adding leadership experience at the back, which is lost through Dawson’s exit, as well as providing cover on either side in the heart of the back four.
Spurs were linked with a move for Matteo Musacchio of Villarreal but the reported fee that deal would have required far exceeds the £8 million which Tottenham pay for Fazio.
Spurs have defended well so far in the Premier League and Fazio's arrival will only increase the number of defensive options for Pochettino ahead of the important game against Liverpool and other up and coming fixtures.
Spurs are yet to concede a goal and that’s due largely to the impressive performances of new signing Eric Dier as well as the return of World Cup stars such as Jan Vertonghen.
Hopefully Fazio will enable Spurs to prolong their impressive defensive start to the season, which increases the chances that they will be able to steal close and narrow games in their race for the top four.
It’s also significant that Fazio has a winning mentality coming off of a successful Europa League campaign with Sevilla.
That experience of the competition last season will do Spurs good as they look to win the tournament and qualify for the Champions League, which would bypass the necessity of needing to finish fourth.
Here’s what Spurs fans are making of their new signing on Twitter.
LRT. More or less what I've said. Fazio, once settled in, will improve our defence which is ultimately the most important thing. #Fazio— Spurspanyol (@Spurspanyol) August 27, 2014
