Dawson completed the move last night and was immediately greeted by a wave of positive support from fans of Spurs, wishing him well as he embarks on what could be the final move of his career.
Dawson may well have desired seeing out his playing days with Tottenham but Mauricio Pochettino has to be given credit for improving the squad over the course of this summer.
Spurs are expected to add the signing of Federico Fazio before the end of the transfer window, which would have pushed Dawson even further down the pecking order.
Fazio will most likely strike up a centre-back partnership with Jan Vertonghen, which would have confined Dawson to the bench and appearances in the domestic cup competitions and the Europa League.
There is a hole in Tottenham’s squad which is created by his departure but at 27-years-old Fazio is well suited to fill that gap with his experience.
Dawson remains a very competent top flight defender and although he lacks the pace he had in his younger days, he’s still capable of keeping the best strikers in the Premier League quiet on his best day.
Fazio could well feel a little bit of pressure coming into the squad because of what a popular figure Dawson had become before he left.
It’s always important for a popular player to leave on good terms because it maintains the relationship with fans despite their no longer being a direct connection between the individual and the football club.
Dawson can return in the future knowing that he’s gone all out during his Tottenham career and knowing that he’ll always be welcomed back at White Hart Lane.
Here’s what Spurs fans had to say about his exit via Twitter.
