Tottenham signing Federico Fazio does not back down from confrontation.

Tottenham confirmed the signing of Argentine defender Federico Fazio yesterday, bringing in a star they hope will be an ideal replacement and upgrade on Michael Dawson.

Fazio was a Europa League winner with Sevilla last season, and the 27-year-old will hope to hit the ground running for a Spurs side sitting pretty in the Premier League with two wins from two games.

Under the management of compatriot Mauricio Pochettino, he will hope to shine, and as you would expect from a South American defender, he has an uncompromising side.

While only sent off twice in his career, the giant centre-half is not likely to back down from anybody as the photo on the right of him squaring off with Emmanuel Pogatetz shows.

Fazio, wearing yellow, was not intimidated by the former Middlesbrough defender nicknamed 'mad dog' for his abrasive style and often brutal challenges, when his Sevilla side took on Hannover in the Europa League in 2011.

In another shot, Fazio can be seen confronting former Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers striker Roque Santa Cruz while the Paraguayan was on loan at Real Betis in 2012, arguing with him and pushing him back angrily.

Tottenham were at times too soft a touch last season, particularly when rolled over home and away by Liverpool and Manchester City, and Fazio is likely to bring a little more authority to their backline.

The Argentine is the second tallest defender in the Premier League, behind only Arsenal's Per Mertesacker, and Tottenham's North London rivals are a side he is vaguely familiar with.

He featured home and away against the Gunners in the 2007/08 Champions League group stages, landing up with a mixed record.

His Sevilla side were defeated 3-0 at The Emirates, with Arsenal scoring twice through Robin van Persie, Eduardo and an own goal, but they beat Arsene Wenger's men in Seville, bouncing back from a goal down to win 3-1, with ex-Spurs man Frederic Kanoute on the scoresheet.

Tottenham fans will hope he can help them give the Gunners a bit more robustness next season, and if there are scuffles ensuing, don't expect him to be backing down.
