Chelsea may not have finished their summer transfer business yet, with reports from Spain claiming Alvaro Arbeloa could be heading to Stamford Bridge.
The Real Madrid defender is said to be considering his options after deciding to leave the Bernabeu, but it remains to be seen if he can complete a switch before Monday’s deadline.
The latest claim comes from Spanish newspaper AS, which suggests both Chelsea and Napoli are interested in the former Liverpool defender.
At first glance, the rumour may appear strange. After all, Jose Mourinho has a whole host of defensive options – both currently at the club and out on loan – and Arbeloa’s presence could rob a younger player of a chance to add to his appearance-tally in the short-term.
However it may not be as bizarre as first thought. After all, the 31-year-old can play anywhere across the back-line and would offer considerable experience in a season in which Chelsea are realistic contenders for every competition they are a part of.
They will need strength in depth, and Arbeloa would certainly add to that. But it would not be a necessity, which suggests the other alleged interested party – Napoli – could have a clear run at the Spaniard if he does indeed leave this summer.
