Marcelo 'very sad' about Di Maria's Manchester United switch

Marcelo says that he is 'very sad' that Angel Di Maria has departed Real Madrid to join Manchester United.

Marcelo says that he is ‘very sad’ to see Angel Di Maria leave Real Madrid for Manchester United.

The Argentine midfielder completed a £60 million move to Old Trafford yesterday and his departure has clearly upset Marcelo.

The Brazilian full-back had created a close bond with Di Maria during their time at Real Madrid together and he was disappointed to bid farewell to his friend.

"It was very sad because he is not only a footballer to me but also a friend," Marcelo told ESPN.

"I can say that he is like a brother to me. I am very sad but football is like that."

Di Maria has been allowed to leave the Bernabeu after another summer of expensive recruitment from the La Liga side.

Last season’s Champions League winners have signed Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez during this transfer window, leaving Di Maria’s first-team opportunities looking limited.

This is despite an impressive campaign last year, where he made 17 assists for his teammates and was one of the Spanish giant’s biggest stars.

He will now need to recreate that form at Old Trafford, where United are in desperate need of some quality.

Louis van Gaal’s side are still looking for their first win of the campaign after a stuttering start.

The Red Devils have lost to Swansea City and drawn with Sunderland so far during their league season, while a 4-0 defeat to MK Dons in the League Cup last night meant that concerns have grown.

Di Maria will be brought in with the intention of bringing some much needed pace and creativity to their play, but there is a lot of pressure for him to adapt to in his first year in English football.

The 26-year-old could go on to make his debut at the weekend for his new club when United take on Burnley.
