Manchester United were well beaten in the League Cup at MK Dons last night.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal would have been hoping for his first competitive win in the League Cup last night but instead he was treated to a resounding 4-0 defeat at the hands of MK Dons.

The Dutchman made ten changes from the side that grabbed a point at Sunderland last weekend as United’s fans were quickly silenced after the excitement of signing Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid.

United have some big questions to answer before the weekend as LvG’s prediction that United won’t be anywhere near their best for at least three months is starting to look exceedingly accurate.

LvG showed a lot of guts to play several youngsters in such a big game with debuts in the wing-back positions for Reece James and Saidy Janko down either side of the pitch.

However, the younger core of players struggled against a side with plenty of gritty, aggressive and determined players who have all been playing together for a very long time.

It will be fascinating to see how United react to the heavy defeat ahead of the weekend as LvG has shown his hand in terms of his priorities for the rest of the coming season.

The focus now is the Premier League and the FA Cup and with United now set to play even fewer games, there are no excuses in terms of burnout if they can’t at least make the top four.

Here’s a selection of the best images from the game.
