Forget Di Maria, another Real Madrid - Manchester United transfer is on the cards

As Manchester United wrap up the signing of Angel di Maria, Guillermo Varela is being linked in the opposite direction.

It probably says a lot about the David Moyes era, that the very first player signed after his appointment has yet to play a first team game for the club.

While it's doubtful the Scotsman ever had any idea even who Guillermo Varela was, or that a deal was in the pipeline, when he agreed to take over, illustrates the confusion around United's terrible summer of 2013.

This year of course has not been much better, but Angel di Maria's record breaking addition puts a shine on a transfer window which Marouane Fellaini simply failed to 12 months ago.

With Di Maria incoming from Real Madrid, it is somewhat surprising that the Champions League winners are taking an interest in the aforementioned Varela, 21, as a potential last minute signing.

The Mail report that 'Real have asked for a loan for the right-back which could then become a permanent £4m deal.

The plan is however not for Varela to go into the Real first team, but to link up with Real Madrid Castilla, their B side managed by Zinedine Zidane.

Varela is a Uruguayan under-21 international, and is well down the pecking order at United. At right-back, he was overshadowed by another addition the side last summer Saidy Janko, and Marnick Vermijl is also considered ahead of him in the pecking order.

Last season the youngster made 18 appearances for the under-21s making three assists, and has played once so far this campaign.
