Former Barcelona and Valencia midfielder Gaizka Mendieta has hailed new Tottenham Hotspur signing Federico Fazio as an excellent signing and expects the centre-back to thrive in the Premier League.
Joining from Sevilla in an £8 million deal, Fazio made 179 appearances during his eight seasons with the Spanish side, winning the 2013-14 Europa League in the process, while establishing himself as one of the top defenders in La Liga.
Signing a four-year deal at White Hart Lane, Mendieta believes the arrival of the 27-year-old is another significant coup for the club, and expects big things this season under Mauricio Pochettino.
‘He was a great at Sevilla,’ the ex-Spain international told Sky Sports News HQ. ‘I was a bit shocked he was leaving because it was so late [in the transfer window], but it looked like it was happening after he was forced to train on his own.
‘It’s a great signing for Spurs. With him on board, it’s looking good for the season ahead.
‘With the new manager and other new signings, it seems things are going in the right direction.’
Fazio becomes Tottenham’s fourth summer arrival after Swansea pair Ben Davies and Michel Vorm, and promising Eric Dier from Sporting Lisbon, with the towering Argentine set to take Hull-bound Michael Dawson’s place in the squad.
With centre-back partners Younes Kaboul and Jan Vertonghen developing a solid rapport in the 4-0 win over Queens Park Rangers, it remains to be seen whether the two-time capped international will feature against Liverpool on the weekend, but it shouldn’t be long before he’s pushing for spot in the lineup.
