Bayern Munich close to deal for Real Madrid's Xabi Alonso

Real Madrid's Xabi Alonso is reportedly close to move to German champions Bayern Munich, after falling down the pecking order at the Bernabeu.

While Bayern Munich have been strongly linked with a move for Sami Khedira in recent weeks, the midfielder’s decision to remain at Real Madrid has seen the club turn their attentions to teammate Xabi Alonso.

According to reports, Alonso himself wants a switch to the Bundesliga giants and, despite his manager Carlo Ancelotti being reluctant to part with the veteran, talks are moving towards a potential £8 million deal.

Joining Real from Liverpool in August 2009 for around £30 million, the 33-year-old has made 236 appearances during his five seasons at the club, proving a crucial part of last season’s Champions League success, despite missing the final against city rivals Atletico Madrid due to suspension.

However, the signing of Toni Kroos this summer has seen the ex-Spain international fall down the pecking order at the Bernanbeu and, with the German outfit needing a short-term fix after serious injuries to Javi Martinez and Thiago Alcanta, a move would make clear sense.

While club CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is still reported to be keen on Khedira, Pep Guardiola is said to have made the former Reds stalwart his number one target, and it appears as though the Barcelona legend could be set to get his man.

Despite signing a new two-year contract in January, Alonso had been linked with both a return to Liverpool and to Manchester United earlier this summer, though such reports always appeared tenuous at best, even with a possible departure on the cards.

This latest news marks an eventful 24 hours for Alonso, having also announced his retirement from international football, after winning 114 appearances since his 2003 debut, and establishing himself as a regular in the sides which won an unprecedented three successive major tournaments from 2008 to 2012.
