Aston Villa linked to Italian marksman

Aston Villa have contacted Bologna to discuss former Italian Under-21 international striker Robert Acquafresca, according to press reports.

Robert Acquafresca was linked with Leeds United earlier in the transfer window, but now Aston Villa seem to be hovering.

The 26-year-old striker is expected to leave Bologna this summer after the Emilia-Romagna outfit were relegated from Serie A last season.

Bologna are now preparing for life in the second tier and have been forced to sell off some of their main assets. The signature of Daniele Cacia appears to have been in readiness for Acquafresca's exit.

Acquafresca spent the start of his career at Torino but he then joined Inter's youth ranks where he developed as a player but never got a chance to play for the senior side.

Inter loaned Acquafresca out and during one of those spells at Cagliari between 2007 and 2009 he found impressive striking form and netted 24 goals in 68 games.

Since then things haven't been easy for Acquafresca and he never matched those numbers at any of the other clubs he represented.

Reports suggest that Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is looking for attacking cover and could land Acquafresca for around £850,000.

However, it was suggested during links with Leeds that Acquafresca may not want to leave Italy and that could again prove a problem.
