How much would Messi cost and we've seen di Maria's price! Who's that in 2nd with assists? pic.twitter.com/NRCLYMPwpQ— Ian Wright (@IanWright0) August 26, 2014
Angel Di Maria’s impending transfer to Manchester United may have provided the Red Devil’s fans with some much needed optimism, but he still falls behind a former Real Madrid teammate and current Premier League star in one category.
As shown by the picture above, Di Maria has created the third highest amount of goals out of any player in the top European leagues since 2010, but he is still behind Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil.
Ozil has created seven more goals for his teammates than Di Maria has since the turn of the decade and that should provide warning to United fans not to get too carried away by their new signing.
The arrival of Ozil at the Emirates last summer was the biggest transfer of the summer, but he has yet to show his best form in England.
The German World Cup winner has come under wide-ranging criticism after a series of indifferent performance in an Arsenal shirt, but these stats suggest that his creativity is under-rated.
Di Maria’s value, of course, cannot be measured purely on assists, but he will be expected to add creativity to United’s attacking line-up and the fact he falls behind Ozil over a sustained period of time is somewhat of a surprise.
However, despite Ozil’s advantage over United’s £60 million purchase during the past four years, there was a big difference in the totals which both collected last year.
Di Maria was responsible for creating 17 of Real Madrid’s goals last year, whereas Ozil only set-up nine for his Arsenal teammates.
Ozil did manage to get to 17 assists in a season twice during his time in Spain, though, and it goes to prove that performing in La Liga doesn’t always translate to being a success in the Premier League.
United will be hoping that the arrival of the Argentine does work out, as they desperately need him to hit the ground running.
Di Maria has pressure on him to add creativity, pace and energy to Louis Van Gaal's side's attacking line-up and he will need to show his best form to break them out of the slump which they are currently on.
