Manchester United have made their marquee signing of the summer after the club confirmed the arrival of Real Madrid's Argentine international Angel Di Maria.
After Real snapped up Monaco's Colombian World Cup star James Rodriguez, Di Maria has been pushed out of Carlo Ancelotti's side and subsequently asked to leave the Spanish capital in search of first team football elsewhere.
Given the opportunity to snap up a world class player - something United fans have been crying out for - the Red Devils have swooped to take Di Maria to Old Trafford in a deal believed to be in the region of £60m - and Di Maria spoke of his delight on the club's official website.
"I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester United. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Spain and there were a lot of clubs interested in me, but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for," Di Maria said.
"Louis van Gaal is a fantastic coach with a proven track record of success and I am impressed by the vision and determination everyone has to get this club back to the top – where it belongs. I now just cannot wait to get started," he added.
Meanwhile, manager van Gaal praised the former Benfica man's ability, and gave United fans a taste of what Di Maria can offer his side after picking up just one point from the club's first two Premier League games of the season.
"Angel is a world-class midfielder but most importantly he is a team player," said the Dutchman. There is no doubting his immense natural talent. He is a tremendously fast and incisive left-footed player who puts fear into the most accomplished defence. His dribbling skills and his ability to take on and beat opponents are a joy to watch. He is an excellent addition to the team."
