The Gunners have missed out on Kostas Manolas as the 23-year-old Greece international has completed a £10.4 million move to the Italian capital with just a week left to go in this summer’s transfer window.
Time is running out for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger who, despite bringing in youngster Calum Chambers, still needs to find a genuine replacement for former captain Thomas Vermaelen who signed for Barcelona this summer.
The Gunners let Carl Jenkinson go out on loan to West Ham United with Chambers expected to compete with Mathieu Debuchy for the right full-back spot in the long-term following the departure of Bacary Sagna, and while he has impressed in central defence, even he alone is not enough cover and lacks experience.
Reports have linked the club with interest in Liverpool’s Daniel Agger whose future is far from certain at Anfield, as well as Vermaelen’s Belgian teammate Toby Alderweireld.
The late swing and miss for Kostas Manolas leaves them with precious little time to negotiate with alternative targets.
Perhaps the manager has deals already in progress, or perhaps the Emirates faithful are staring down the barrel of another deadline day dash to sign key personnel, especially following the injury to striker Olivier Giroud last weekend with the France international potentially facing three months on the sidelines.
However, Arsenal fans need not fear just yet – the last time Arsene Wenger completed a deadline day signing in central defence it was the gentle German giant himself, Per Mertesacker which, in the long-run, has proven to be one of the club’s best signings in recent years.
