New Spurs star Eric Dier staying grounded after fantastic start

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier says he isn't getting carried away with his impressive start to the Premier League.

After just two games, Tottenham's £4 million signing from Sporting Lisbon is already looking like he could be one of the bargains of the summer.

Dier, an England youth international, has scored in both of Tottenham's first two Premier League games this season. His first came as a last-gasp 93rd minute winner in the 1-0 victory over West Ham United at Upton Park; the second was a near post header in the resounding 4-0 win over QPR at White Hart Lane.

In an interview he told the official Spurs website: "I’m not going to get carried away, I know it’s not easy, far from it. I don’t think anyone will get carried away, the gaffer won’t allow that. It’s still early days but it’s really nice to be playing such good football.”

“I said last week that I’d love to score more, so I’m really happy to score again and the most important thing is that we won and won well, so that’s good.

“We were playing well before the first goal and we kept pushing and trying to play attacking football. That’s how the gaffer wants to play. At half-time he told us not to stop, to keep going and that’s what we did.”

Dier's opening two performances look even more impressive when you line him up against established world class centre-half Vincent Kompany.

Comparing the young versatile defender's first two games to the Belgians shows how well and quickly he has adapted since his summer move from Portugal. In every stat comparison, with the exception of total clearance, Dier comes out on top or level.

Dier has gone from being a relatively unknown English youngster playing abroad, to a star of the opening Premier League season. His and Tottenham's form will give their fans hope that they can mount the most serious top four challenge yet.
