United have made a poor start to the new season, losing 2-1 to Swansea City on the opening day of the season before the 1-1 draw at Sunderland on Sunday evening. The disappointing start of the Louis van Gaal era means the club have to become active in the transfer market before the September 1st transfer deadline, with last week's capture of Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo not enough to turn United back into a top four team.
Southampton left back Luke Shaw and Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera have already joined the club, but van Gaal seems to be on the verge of landing his marquee signing - Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria.
The Argentine international, 26, has been forced out of the Real side after the arrival of Monaco's Colombian World Cup star James Rodriguez, and Di Maria has recently told manager Carlo Ancelotti that he wants to leave the Bernabeu in order to play first team football elsewhere.
Now, a big money move to Old Trafford is on the cards, with the fee believed to be around £63.9m as United attempt to inject some quality into their side - and former United striker Federico Macheda believes that there are few players who would be better for the club than Di Maria.
"I think he's one of the best signings they could make," said the Italian, who now plays for Cardiff City. "At Man United a player like Di Maria will lift the players and the club as well. If they can get him it will be great for the club. He has played already for a big club in Real Madrid so he will be fine with the pressure on him."
Di Maria's versatility to play in central midfield or out wide makes him an excellent addition - despite the huge transfer fee attached to his arrival. United's recruitment can't stop with the addition of the former Benfica star though, with a centre back and central midfielder still needed.
