Liverpool were shown how strong Manchester City will be this season after a convincing 3-1 win for Manuel Pellegrini's side at the Etihad Stadium.
The Reds were the better side in the first half but couldn't find the goal, and were once again made to pay for a defensive error as Alberto Moreno pondered on the ball, allowing Stevan Jovetic to nip in to score the opening goal.
The Montenegrin international made it two with an instinctive finish in the second half, before substitute Sergio Aguero scored the third within a minute of replacing Edin Dzeko.
Liverpool did get a consolation through a Pablo Zabaleta own goal after Rickie Lambert's back post header was saved, but it was a disappointing night for Brendan Rodgers' side - how did his players fare tonight?
Simon Mignolet 5 - awful positioning for Aguero's goal, Mignolet's inconsistent displays for Liverpool continue.
Glen Johnson 4 - couldn't cope with Clichy's overlapping in the first half, and once again showed poor distribution. Must improve with Javier Manquillo breathing down his neck.
Dejan Lovren 6 - battled well against Dzeko and Jovetic, and may be blamed by some for Jovetic's goal, but recognised the danger and relied on a team mate to follow suit - only to be let down.
Martin Skrtel 6 - Largely the same as Lovren, but slightly less confident in possession - again, has Sakho vying for his place and needs to improve.
Alberto Moreno 6 - A tough debut for Moreno. Caught napping for Jovetic's goal but improved from there. Looks decent, but needs time to settle in England.
Steven Gerrard 5 - not his best display. Gerrard fell asleep for the opening goal, and should've known better than to let Silva wander in to the box.
Joe Allen 6 - had good moments but didn't get on the ball enough to really hurt the City defence.
Jordan Henderson 6 - made encouraging runs forward in the first half, but his impact was diminished in the second period.
Philippe Coutinho 5 - had some encouraging moments in the first half but couldn't create enough and was almost anonymous in the second half.
Raheem Sterling 6 - when Liverpool were on top, Sterling looked lively and dangerous with his pace, but didn't get on the ball enough in the second half.
Daniel Sturridge 7 - Liverpool's one shining light of the game. Sturridge was electric with pace and movement, often beating Kompany with trickery. Won the ball back despite the game being over, and put in an excellent cross for Liverpool's consolation.
Lazar Markovic 6 - showed off his pace on a couple of occasions, and like Moreno will just need time to be a factor.
Rickie Lambert 6 - got himself into good goalscoring positions - first for the consolation, secondly when he opted to pass rather than shoot, which ended Liverpool's hopes of a comeback.
Emre Can 5 - booked within a minute of coming on the pitch. Summed up Liverpool's night.
