Angel Di Maria’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu looks all but over after recent reports state that a move to Manchester United is on the cards.
Di Maria has been said to have been looking for an exit this summer as he feels undervalued in the Spanish capital with PSG and United the presumed likely destinations.
The last transfer between the two La Liga giants caused mayhem in Spain when former Portuguese superstar Luis Figo traded the Nou Camp for Madrid.
A proposed Angel Di Maria transfer to the Catalans might not have reached those heights, but a deal nonetheless would certainly not go down well with the Santiago Bernabeu faithful.
Barcelona’s reported interest isn’t entirely a surprise given Di Maria’s fast-paced style of play, but in a new twist reported by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, it has been revealed that former boss Pep Guariola uncharacteristically rejected the chance to sign him when he was available for as little as €20 million more than four years ago.
“The truth of Barca’s interest in Di Maria comes from the past. In Txiki Begiristain’s last season as Barca technical secretary, Di María was one of the players he insisted the most when the Argentine was still playing for Benfica. Txiki, now at Manchester City, guaranteed the arrival of Di Maria when he was only 22. However, Pep Guardiola rejected the offer,” the report states.
Now, Di Maria’s price has increased dramatically following his fabulous campaign last season and Spanish journalist Guillem Balague states that a move to Manchester will cost United more than €60 million.
The Old Trafford outfit are keen to add more faces before the transfer deadline and the midfielder reportedly tops van Gaal’s wish list.
