Sporting Lisbon boss comments on Manchester United target William Carvalho’s mindset

Sporting Lisbon coach Marco Silva says that Manchester United target William Carvalho has not been affected by his dismissal last weekend.

William Carvalho has been linked with a move to Manchester United all summer, and following his performance for Portugal at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Arsenal and Chelsea (reportedly) started to show interest.

But the highly-rated defensive midfielder still remains a Sporting Lisbon player and that is how it is going to be, the Portuguese club’s coach Marco Silva has suggested.

‘Our players are coveted because they did a good job (last season) and we have to be prepared for that’, Record quotes the 37-year-old as saying. ‘But that does not take away the focus on our work.

‘Players including William do not have any anxiety. He started late but is working hard. There has been some noise due to his dismissal, but he is a very important player for us’.

Silva was alluding to Carvalho’s dismissal in Sporting’s opening game of the Primeira Liga season against Academica at the Estadio Cidade de Coimbra last Saturday which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Although the 22-year-old defensive midfielder looked good and did his job while on the pitch, he received two yellow cards and missed the final 25 or so minutes of the match as a result.

It was Carvalho’s first red card of his professional career and is unlikely to deter his prospective suitors from making a move. Of course, much has been read into his sending-off and questions have been asked of his commitment to Sporting, but Silva’s comments make it clear that Carvalho is not trying to engineer a move.

But will that drive away speculation on his future? Probably not.

Carvalho, who reportedly has a buy-out clause of £37 million, is a brilliant talent and his performances of last season do merit the (reported) interest in him from Arsenal, United and Chelsea. Whether he leaves Sporting before the end of the summer transfer window is another matter altogether.
