Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria is ‘very, very close’ to joining Manchester United, according to respected Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague.
Balague, who works for Sky Sports and AS, claims that the Argentina international winger will cost the Red Devils over €60 million and will wear the number 7 shirt.
Things finally moving about di María: meetings (agents, clubs) will take place early nxt wk. He has chosen United— Guillem Balague (@GuillemBalague) August 23, 2014
Real and United are very close in the valuation of the player. He will cost MORE THAN 60m euros, could be 70. He will wear number 7— Guillem Balague (@GuillemBalague) August 23, 2014
Cristiano told di María United is the club to go. Mendes is returning to Europe from Singapur to finalise deal. All very very close.— Guillem Balague (@GuillemBalague) August 23, 2014
United have long been linked with a move for the 26-year-old, who was also on the radar of Paris Saint-Germain. However, PSG’s failure to cough up the cash due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations meant that the Manchester outfit went to the head of the queue.
All that has been well-documented, but what is new information is Cristiano Ronaldo advising Di Maria to join United. The 29-year-old Portugal international played for the 20-time English champions for six years between 2003 and 2009 before moving to Spain.
It was earlier reported in the Spanish media that Ronaldo wanted Di Maria to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu, but it appears that he has advised his teammate to join his former club since he is apparently determined to leave.
Whatever the case be, the news has certainly led to one former United star purring. Gary Neville has given his thought on the prospect of Di Maria playing in manager Louis van Gaal’s team this season.
I know it's early and speculation but Di Maria fits the bill for United 100% ..— Gary Neville (@GNev2) August 23, 2014
