Chelsea won their second game of the season today, defeating yet another newly promoted side Leicester City, following on from their opening win against Burnley on Monday.
The 2-0 scoreline paints a composed picture, but there is no doubt that this was far from an easy win. Indeed they had to fight for victory, and needed their new number one goalkeeper to be on top form. Which, of course, he was.
Thibaut Courtois returned to the club this summer from a very successful three year loan spell at Atletico Madrid and has dethroned Petr Cech as the club custodian already.
Today he highlighted why with another composed and stirring performance between the sticks, the highlight of which was a save from David Nugent.
Nugent was clean through on goal and it seemed as if he was going to slot it home for 1-0. However the Belgian charged off his line to prevent the one-cap England international. It was similar in style to the save he made against Lionel Messi in the World Cup. The Argentine was bearing down on goal in the final minute of the quarter-final tie, before Courtois shut him out. The difference in this case being, it was Nugent, not Messi.
But his catching, claiming and decision making all looks to be in top order. While he is also serene on the pitch, looking at ease with every action he does for the team.
After the game Mourinho was asked about Courtois' performance, and did not get carried away, simply stating to Sky Sports:
"That's what Petr did so many times in this club year after year, so it's nothing new for us. It's important at a big club to have the kind of goalkeeper who's almost sleeping during the match, and suddenly in the right moment he says 'yes, I'm here'. Thibaut did this, the same way Petr did so many times for us."
But Chelsea fans were far less reserved in their praise on Twitter.
