Sale of reported Arsenal and Newcastle target may be off due to injury

Clement Grenier, who has also been linked with Everton and Southampton, will need an operation to solve a groin problem.

The 23-year-old has reportedly told Lyon that he wants to leave the club this summer.

And Arsenal, as well as Newcastle United have been linked with a move for the Frenchman.

The Gunners are no longer believed to be interested in Grenier, although he was reportedly on their radar earlier this summer.

The Magpies, however, have been continuously linked with the attacking midfielder, who is said to have also been tracked by Everton and Southampton.

But Lyon boss Hubert Fournier's latest comments may have thrown a spanner in the works for any potential Premier League move.

Indeed, the coach has revealed that Grenier will need an operation on a groin injury, making a move away from Ligue 1 less likely.

“His transfer? It is currently more likely that he will stay at Lyon," Fournier told French reporters.

“We knew he was still fragile. But we played him because we thought he was capable. I am not sure that one more week would have changed anything..

“He will need an operation, because it is not bearable anymore both for him and for the club.”

The 23-year-old is a France international and has been at Lyon since 2009.
