The latest Manchester United transfer news, views and rumours.

Manchester United have launched a bid for Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan, according to reports in Portugal.

Indeed, Record (whose findings have been translated by Sport Witness) claim United have made a bid superior to that of Atletico Madrid and Monaco's.

The Argentine winger most heavily linked to the club this summer, of course, has been Angel Di Maria of Real Madrid, although the Portuguese press claim it is Gaitan that has attracted an official bid.

Guillem Balague yesterday stated that Man United are yet to submit an offer for Di Maria - but Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira apparently wants €45 million for Gaitan.

In other news, talkSPORT are reporting that Danny Welbeck was left 'surprised' when boss Louis van Gaal told him he can leave Old Trafford before the end of the transfer window.

The 23-year-old England striker reportedly felt as though his future in Manchester was safe.

Elsewhere, former United stars Andy Cole and Dennis Irwin have told ITV Sport that they believe Van Gaal will bring the 'fear factor' back at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman lost his opening Premier League match 2-1 to Swansea City but takes his side to Sunderland on Sunday hoping to bounce back with three vital points.

However, Cole has also warned that Manchester United can no longer attract the best players on the market due to their lack of Champions League football.
