The Sevilla centre back boasts some impressive defensive stats when compared to Tottenham's current crop of defenders.
As reports linking Federico Fazio to Tottenham get stronger and stronger every day, it is worth comparing the giant Argentinian defender to those players already at the club.
Sevilla boss Unai Emery has admitted that the 27-year-old is set for a move to White Hart Lane, also revealing that he believes the defender is worth far more that the £8 million release clause that Spurs are set to pay.
Fazio, who has won 2 caps for his country, enjoyed his strongest season at the La Liga side last year, helping Los Rojiblancos finish 5th and win the Europa League.
With only Michael Dawson playing over 23 games for the London side, it is little surprise that Spurs had so many problems defensively last season. Fazio was also some way short of a full season of matches, playing 27 times in La Liga, but this still would have put him second to Dawson, who managed 32 appearances.
Below we compare the central defenders at Tottenham last year to the former Ferro Carril Oeste man:
|2013/14 League Season||Team||Clearances / apps||Interception / apps||Blocks / apps||Error Lead To Goal||Defensive Errors||Aerial Duels Won||Won Tackle / apps||Apps||Mins|
What is immediately apparent is that Fazio comes top in the majority of the categories looked at. The Sevilla centre back was way ahead in both intercepting passes and blocking shots, with his giant 6'5" frame able to cover that little bit more space. Interestingly, Vlad Chiriches, the shortest of the five players but also the most mobile, came second in both categories. The 27-year-old Fazio also came second to Michael Dawson when it came to making successful clearances, with 7.74 per game.
Fazio also made the joint fewest mistakes, with just one error leading to a goal and two overall. It is no surprise to see the Argentine top the charts when it comes to winning aerial duels, with his 77% a score that would have made him the best in the Premier League last season.
Clearly Fazio would be a valuable addition to the Tottenham back line should he make the move from La Liga, though what will be key for a player known more for his strength than his pace, will be continuing his good form from last season and staying fit.
