Report: Napoli scared by Lucas injuries, want loan not purchase

Lucas Leiva

Napoli boss Rafa Benitez is keen to sign Liverpool's Lucas Leiva, but he favours a loan deal because of fears over the midfielder's fitness.

Many Liverpool fans expected Lucas Leiva to have left ahead of the new season but he surprisingly featured against Southampton.

However, Napoli are still on the 27-year-old's trail and Lucas's days at Liverpool could be numbered with Emre Can waiting in the wings.

Lucas has reportedly stated that he is open to a move and he may relish the opportunity to relaunch himself in Serie A.

Napoli have been frequently linked with Lucas and coach Benitez is said to be determined to work with him again.

However, the latest reports from Sky Italia suggest that Napoli won't consider a permanent purchase and are insisting on a loan agreement.

The Partenopei are said to be reluctant to commit to Lucas for the long term because of his recent injury problems, which they fear could recur.

However, Liverpool are reportedly only willing to agree a permanent transfer at the moment unless no other interest emerges before the transfer window closes.
