Arsenal were being heavily linked with plenty of defensive midfielders this time last year, and it was then reported the club could be on the verge of signing a former player in the form of Mathieu Flamini.

The injury prone midfielder had left the club for AC Milan in 2008 but struggled with injury during his time in Italy.

With that in mind he began training with Arsenal in order to maintain is fitness in a search for a new club - but papers began circulating rumours that Arsene Wenger could actually offer him a contract on this day.

But a week later Flamini joined on a free transfer, much to fan dismay. However he has since gone on to win back the trust of the Arsenal faithful.

Wet Willi

The day before saw Tottenham complete a medical with their transfer target Willian. But the day after an approach came in from Chelsea - who were looking to hijack a move for the hard-working Brazilian winger.

It was reported that Roman Abramovich had spoken to the owner of Anzhi, the club Willian was currently with, to make him an offer to stall the Tottenham move.

It was a ransack that worked as Willian preferred Chelsea and just two days later he joined the club in a £32 million, leaving Jose Mourinho chuffed with getting one over on Andre Villas-Boas.

Sakho wants Liverpool

Mamadou Sakho was telling Paris Saint-Germain that he wanted a move to Liverpool a year ago today. Liverpool had seen an opening offer of £8 million rejected for the player, but Sakho was reportedly set on Anfield as his location.

Liverpool got their man, signing him on transfer deadline day for a fee of £15 million.
